Life after High School
Life after high school means independence, productivity and social connection. At Adapted Home Education, we call these the 3 circles of purpose. A special needs child has those same purposes, but they will likely be reached in a different way.
That's where Adapted Home Education comes in.
At Adapted Home Education, we provide tools and curriculum to help you overcome the confines of your child's struggling body so he or she can experience a rich education while striving toward maximum independence – whatever that looks like for them. This is important because:
for both you and your child
That means thinking through what is important during each season of education and prioritizing those things. Here's what it looks like:
In elementary school, it means remediating the 3 Rs: reading, writing and arithmetic, exploring basic knowledge in a variety of subjects and building a vocabulary to communicate thoughts and ideas.
In middle school, it's about building on that knowledge through experimentation and application while continuing to remediate in core subjects.
In high school, in addition to deepening knowledge and ability to reason, the focus shifts to include advocating for themselves and their ideas, specializing in a skill that can be used to support themselves or serve others, and equipping them with the tools necessary for their specific path after high school.
Post high school means extending what you have been doing in high school, spending two to four years developing and fine tuning a lifestyle that they love with the supports they need to be as independent as possible so they will be prepared for a life without you. Independent can mean on their own, with or without supports, or independent at home.
Throughout the years, they will be developing thinking and problem solving skills at higher and higher levels. These are the foundation for true independence.
Each of these seasons should be adapted to your child's unique needs and abilities. Your adapted homeschool may not look like anyone else's, but it will be tailor made to your child's needs, abilities and dreams for the future. Will it be difficult? Yes. Will it be worth it? Definitely.
